When a couple decides to go their separate ways, there are many issues which must be dealt with. Even the most amicable divorces are stressful. If children are involved, an added layer of emotion and concern comes into play. The divorce often leaves children with a lot of questions, and sometimes even a level of guilt. Colorado parents who decide to divorce should learn how to talk to their children so they understand how the new situation will affect them.
Sesame Street is offering help for parents who want to talk to their children about divorce. They have produced a series of videos called, "Little Children, Big Challenges: Divorce." The videos and guide are for both parents and their children. They include the familiar character of Elmo asking what a divorce is, and a host of other Muppets explaining different facets of the subject.
This is Sesame Street's second attempt at tackling the matter of divorce. The first in 1992 didn't test well with pre-schoolers, so the project was shelved. The project was revived recently in light of estimates that 40 to 60 percent of all new marriages will end in divorce. One parent, who is a school principal in the Denver area, applauds the video. He says many of his 800 students have dealt with the issue firsthand.
Parents who are in the midst of dealing with the end of a marriage should educate themselves on their rights regarding issues of child support, child custody and others. But they should not neglect helping their children deal with the very real stresses and complications that can come with divorce. Perhaps the Sesame Street video effort can help in this regard.
